Using Natural Elements & Watercolor
to tell a story.
Pebble Art is the art of using collected pebbles, sea glass, driftwood, twigs, and other natural elements to create small landscapes, mosaics and more.
Why pebbles? Poets and writers adopted them as symbols of hope and persistence. Pebbles survive change mostly unscathed, becoming ever smoother and rounded through erosion.
To many, the pebble is a symbol of permanence, making it interesting to people
I was introduced to this interesting creative process by a good friend during my first visit to Medford Beach, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2019. I immediately loved creating unique art pieces using natural elements.
No two pebbles, pieces of driftwood, sea glass shards are the same. Each creation is like a jigsaw puzzle with no lines or images to guide you.
Each piece is studied individually & collectively to create a visual story that enhances the beauty of each individual piece.
Sourcing the individual pieces is accomplished by scouting out various rocky beaches and sitting down to dig, analyze, search, and sort for the size, shapes, colors, and other attributes that fit my styles.
Most have come from the fabulous coastline of Nova Scotia, Canada. Scots Bay and Hall’s Harbor pebbles are formed by the power of the Bay of Fundy.
The rock types, sizes, and colors vary from beach to beach and year to year, giving me an endless palette of pebbles, & driftwood to work with.
Watercolor art dates back to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe.
This painting method utilizes paints made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolor refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork.
While I have always admired watercolor artwork, my interest piqued during a trip to Alaska in 2023. This medium provides a broad range of art, from more vivid and sharper images to softer, blended images. If I want to create a visually stunning fern leaf with detailed leaves, I can. Or maybe I want to create a breaking wave in the sea with soft spray and transparent water.
I am inspired by my travels and photos of nature, awe-inspiring scenery, or simple visuals we experience during a walk in the woods or a stroll on the beach.
Watercolors are a balance to pebble art. The pebbles are hard material with defined edges while watercolor allows for the softness and blending of colors. I will be experimenting with combining the two to create new and unique art pieces.
I was born in South Carolina and moved to California at an early age. After a successful career in K-8 education, I am following my passion to create unique wall art, bake rustic sourdough bread loaves, and fashioning warm, inviting, comfortable living spaces leveraging my eye for interior design and organization.
I create my designs in my studios in San Diego, CA and Medford Beach, NS, Canada.
Living within an hour of the ocean, mountains, and desert, I have developed a keen appreciation for the beauty that can be found in nature.
In my designs, I combine natural elements including ocean-sculpted pebbles, driftwood, and sea glass into art pieces that tell a story and showcase these naturally occurring elements.
Watercolor creations are inspired by my love of the beauty in plants, the ocean, and unique scenery that we have seen throughout our travels.
I hope you enjoy my portfolio. Every piece is a hand-made, unique piece of art. The materials and techniques employed vary with each creation. I enjoy meeting people with like interests at the curated art & craft events I participate in.
Watch for upcoming art & craft festival participation.
